  Chapter One

  Emily

Love. If only it was black and white. I loved him once. We had two beautiful children together. Jacob and Autumn were my highlights. They were the reason I put up with it. The back hands, dodging the latest thing his hand had landed on and thrown at me.

Love. I stayed for love. Standing in the cheap motel my fingers went to my wedding ring, and I pulled it off. I stared at it for a few moment before placing it down on the basin sink.

  I couldn’t do it anymore.

“Mom, someone’s at the door!” Autumn my nine year old daughter sung out. I was quick to walk out of the bathroom. My heart dropping. Had he found us? Jacob was sitting on the bed, in a foul mood. Autumn was playing on her tablet.

I pulled back the curtains seeing Hawk standing there at his full height of six foot, he always scared me.

I walked to the door, opening it up and stepping out. So was he here to tell me to go back to James? Hawk was the Sergeant of Arms of The Vulture’s MC. With my husband being the president.

Well soon to be ex husband.

“Emily.” Hawk’s eyes dropped to my neck, seeing the choke marks around my neck. I watched as his lip form a firm line— like he was trying to keep his reaction in tabs.

“Hawk.” I crossed my arms. I knew what he was going to say. He was going to tell me James would change. That James loved me. That he didn’t mean it. Didn’t Hawk understand I had made those excuses for James since the abuse started.

“Not a great place to have the kids.” Hawk said, his eyes looking up at the other rooms. Seeing last night’s leftovers left the other motel room. One night stands was what made this motel money I knew that. But I also didn’t have money.

  So here I was.

  With two kids.

Hawk ’s steel blue eyes locked with mine. “Come stay with me.”

  “No.”

“Emily at least think about it. I’m not telling you to go back to him. But I don’t like you here. By yourself. Unprotected.” Hawk added. His hand going to my cheek and I flinched. I saw the rage spread across his face. “I’d never hurt you Emily.” He declared that like there was some law against it.

But I wanted to laugh. Because even if there was a law against it, he’d most likely be breaking it being the biker he is.

“Yeah. He said the same thing.” I muttered. And his eyes sharpened on me.

“I’m not him. I’d never hurt you.” He dipped his head down, those steel blue intense eyes on me. “I don’t want you or the kids here. So please, don’t make me pull rank. Come stay with me.”

My eyes dropped to his vest, seeing the STG of ARMS emblem on his chest.

We were staying in a one bedroom room, and last night gunshots had woken Autumn up. I knew we couldn’t stay here much longer. But I had no money and the thought of going back to James— scared me.

“Please Em. Come stay with me.” Hawk put a hand under my chin, lifting my head up to look him in the eyes. “I’ll even move out while you’re there, put a prospect out front to keep an eye on you.”

I knew he was saying that but I also knew Hawk wouldn’t leave a prospect in charge of me. So he would be the one camping out front of his own house.

“Okay.” I blew out running hand through my blond hair. “But, you can stay.” I looked him back in the eyes. “I know you’d never hurt me Hawk. Plus you being around might make Jacob feel better about the spilt.”

  “So you’ve really left him?”

  “Yes.”

And I had never meant one word more in my life. Yes. I had finally left the abusive son of a bitch known as my husband. I was never going back to him. Not even if he went sober. Because everyone knows, that he wouldn’t stay sober for long. Hell, he had used that excuse twice to get me to stay. Both times I fell for it.

  Not again.

“Can I see the kids?” Hawk asked. “Haven’t seen my Acorn in weeks. Missed her annoying questions.” He had a sly smile on his face. He had always been close with the kids. I once thought it was because of his President. But I realised quickly that James wasn’t making Hawk spend time with them.

James didn’t force Hawk to install a playground at the clubhouse.

James didn’t force Hawk to listen to Autumn at the family BBQ’s.

I smiled. “She’d love to see you.” And I opened the door, letting it swing open. Autumn glanced up from her tablet, a squeal of delight coming off her lips when she saw Hawk. Jumping up, running to him, hugging him and then peppering for questions. Even Jacob got off his phone to talk to Hawk.

I blew out a long breathe. I could do this. I could single parent two kids.

  Chapter Two

  HAWK

“Acorn ya cheatin’.” It wasn’t a lie; it was a fact. She grinned at me from across the checkerboard- and that grin caused me to buckle about telling her off. “Guess that’s five to zero,” I said and that grin got bigger on her face.

“Autumn bed time!” Emily sung out and Autumn’s face melted with disappointment.

  “But Mom—”

“Don’t even try it Autumn.” Emily was quick to cut her off. “Bed. Now.”

Autumn got up, walking to my side and giving me half a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “Night Hawk.” I half hugged her back as she went to run off, pausing in the door way.

“Thanks for letting us stay here Hawk
.” Acorn grinned at me, before leaving.

My eyes went to Emily who had just walked into the room. A washing basket on her hip. Couldn’t help but think how much I loved it that she had made herself at home. My eyes ran up and down her, those bare legs, tank top up, showing off her flat stomach and those breasts.

I quickly diverted my eyes and reminded myself that she wasn’t my wife. But fuck if only she was.

I glanced back at her seeing the hand marks around her neck. Normally she would wear a scarf even in summer. Now I knew why. I didn’t even realise I was glaring at her neck, till she moved uncomfortable.

“Um do you have any washing?”

I looked her in the eyes. Getting up, taking the basket from her. “Since you’ve got here all you’ve done is clean. Was my house that bad?”

“No Hawk.” She bit her bottom lip, then looked me in the eyes. “I just can’t sit still, waiting for him to show up any second. Just can’t stop worrying that he’ll—” She paused, her eyes going wide. “That’s his bike.”

I frowned. Then I heard the rumbling engine of the bike. That roar, it could be any one of the brothers. But by Emily’s panicked reaction, she was positive it was James.

“I’ll handle it.” I said and I was slightly annoyed that any member would come here, considering I had made it clear I didn’t want visitors.

Taking my gun from my holster on the back of the chair and putting in the waist of my jeans.

I walked out, and saw James leaning his bike to the side. He was furious. I could tell from here. But I locked the front door after me.

  “James.”

“Where the fuck is she!” So he knew she was here. He pointed a finger at me. “You were always spineless when it came to her!”

“Spineless? Me? You’re the one that hits her.” And just like that all the rage I felt towards him, boiled over and I was in his face. Gripping him by his shirt collar. “How the fuck could you put a hand on her? Let alone choke her?”

James sneered in my face. “You think you are in for a chance Hawk? Cause I tell ya now, she’s mine.”

“She ain’t yours.” And I shoved him away from the me and the house. I’d die before he got inside to Emily or the kids. “You fucking choked her!” The disgust I felt even saying those words, sunk in my stomach.

  “She deserved it!”

And my fist went flying into him, tackling him to the ground. He got a few good punches in, I got more in though. But it was when he pulled the gun from my waist and pointed it at me, I had to back down.

“Like always. Taking the coward way out.” I spat some blood out on the grass, from taking his punch. “Come on shoot me mother fucker cause that is the only way you’ll get in that house.”

“You picking her over the brotherhood?” He didn’t lower the gun. “Remember ya place at the table Hawk. Last time I checked you answered to me.”

“Don’t force me to leave the table.” I wasn’t backing down even with a gun pointed at me. “You’ll know I’ll pick them over you.”

“Yeah,” he tilted his head. “Which makes me wonder, are you fucking her? Do you see my kids as yours? Cause she’s my wife. They are my kids. You can’t take my family.”

“You’re a drunk. You’re an abusive prick and if you think I’ll let you be alone with Emily, Acorn and Jacob, ya fucking wrong. You don’t deserve them.” With those words said I walked towards him, grabbing my gun— knowing he didn’t have the guts to pull the trigger.

“Consider this a friendly warning. Stay away from them.” I kept my voice calm. In control. When all I wanted to do was turn this gun on him and point it at his head and pull the trigger.

James’s eyes ran up and down me. “I see how it is.” He glared at me for a few more moments and then walked to his bike. Leaving.

I waited until his bike made it around the corner till I headed toward the house. I had to knock on the front door because I had locked myself out.

Emily opened the door, tears in her eyes, and she launched herself into my arms. Her scent hit me, her slim body melting into mine. Her arms wrapped around my neck. I could feel her tears soaking my shirt.

“Come on princess, you’ll be okay.” I said, running a hand down her back. She pulled back.

“I’m…so.. sorr..” her words broke up, from the sea of tears she was crying.

I cupped her face. “It’s okay.”

“It’s not I’m putting you in an awful situation. I’m making you risk everything with the club.” Her words were coming out jumbled and quickly.

Wrapping an arm around her body, I lifted her up, and walked into the house, closing the front door.

She was basically shaking from fear and tears in my arms. “Emily, look at me.” I spoke calmly, and her eyes locked with mine. “You aren’t making me do anything I don’t want to do. It’s called free will darling. You and the kids mean a hell of a lot to me.”

I don’t know what it was in her eyes, but one second she was looking at me with this marvelled expression the next, her lips were on mine. I went dead still. She was forbidden. She was the President’s wife. She was everything I wanted but couldn’t have.

She pulled back immediately. Her eyes in shock of what she had just done.

“I shouldn’t have done that.” She whispered, and then wouldn’t look me in the eye. “I’m sorry Hawk.”

I gripped her wrist before she walked away, pulling her back. Knew it was against every code in the book. Knew that she wasn’t mine to touch, to hold, to love. But I wasn’t a man to follow the god darn rules.

So I pulled her back into my arms, and kissed her this time. She was the one to go still this time, then her lips melted against mine. At first it was soft, but then the fact she was wearing a singlet that her nipples stood through— which I may have been noticing earlier in the day and the fact her body was pressed against mine, sparked me to run my hands down her sides.

Then gripping her by the ass I lifted her up, turning her and pinning her against the wall. It was her tongue that ran across my body lip.

But it was my tongue that then explored her mouth.

I knew I had to stop.

But fuck if I knew how I was going too.

The softest moan escaped her lips, and I lost all control kissing her like she was mine to fucking have.

But I knew she would regret it if I took it further. So I pulled back. Resting my forehead against hers.

It was her vivid emerald eyes that stunned me every god darn time. And while my eyes were locked with hers at the moment, I didn’t see regret in them.

But was I really going to burn my reputation at the club by not just giving the President’s wife shelter, but by making a move on her? There was a reason Emily Bentley was off limits. Since we were teenagers, I had always had an eye on her.

Too much of a pussy when I was younger to make a move on the cheerleader. But James, he fucking wasn’t afraid. I hated it when they started dating but I accepted it.

I stood by James side when he married her. And I was the first one to notice when things went south in their marriage. The bruises on Emily, the first time I saw them, I brushed it aside. But as time went on, I saw the fucking pattern. It all started after Autumn’s birth.

James’s exact words being. He didn’t want a girl.

I was the first one to hold Autumn apart from Emily. James didn’t even go to the hospital. Things only got worse from there. But I had no idea the abuse was so bad, till I arrived at her house to have a word with James about a shipment.

  End result.

Found Emily with choke marks around her neck. Told her then, I’d help her leave.

I wasn’t stealing his woman. He didn’t fucking own her. And he had never deserved her.

No matter how much of a relationship Emily and I had, I knew she wasn’t prepared for anything else other than friendship. So I was going to get back behind the friend line. I pulled away from her, seeing the concern in her eyes.

  Come t
omorrow I’d act like it hadn’t happened- for her. But right now. I was bathing in the fact I had gotten to kiss Emily.

  Chapter Three

  HAWK

Loyalty. At the end of the day was what the club survived on. When that loyalty bends or breaks, that is when your commitment to the club weakens. As a prospect it is engrained in you, that the club comes first and I had never gone against that.

Stood by shit that most couldn’t stomach.

I was nothing like my father, I followed the club lifestyle as if it was a bible. But now… as I looked around the table of members that weren’t speaking to me. I knew I had burnt bridges that wouldn’t be unburnt.

I didn’t regret the decision of letting Emily move into my house. I didn’t regret going up against my President. But everyone was expecting me to turn on Emily, everyone was expecting me to regret the day I went against my President.

  But that wasn’t the case.

James addressed everyone at the table but me. He was freezing me out. But I wasn’t giving up my patch. He would have to kill me first.

He brought the hammer down on the meeting, the room emptying.

Not one of the boys had the guts to speak to me. James wanted me gone and as far as they were concerned, that was happening.
